چکیده

The Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility (EOF) in case of anaemic cattle mostly affected with haemolytic anaemia were evaluated in this study. As haemolytic anaemia is a consistent finding in different blood protozoan diseases like theileriosis and trypanosomiasis, determination of EOF in these cases shows the level of osmotic stress in the affected animals. The present study was also aimed to determine the influence of temperature, storage time and season on EOF in the anaemic cattle. The EOF was determined by a standard method using NaCl concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 0.9%. The result revealed a significant difference in percentage haemolysis recorded at NaCl concentrations of 0.2%, 0.3% & 0.4% respectively in cattle. The EOF value was at a higher level in the animals affected with theileriosis or trypanosomiasis in comparison to other anaemic cases. The result of present study could be used as a determinant of osmotic stress in anaemic cattle. Keyword: erythrocyte osmotic fragility, haemolytic anaemia, theileriosis, trypanosomiasis

Occurrence and potential causative factors of immune-mediated hemolytic ‎anemia in cattle and river buffaloes

The main objectives of this study were to determine the occurrence and potential causative factors of Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) in native cattle and water buffaloes from southwest of Iran. Fifty-three anemic animals (37 cattle and 16 buffaloes) were studied. A full clinical history and physical examinations were undertaken for all animals. Four clinically healthy cattle and four h...

Studies of Human HbAA Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility Index of Non-Malarious Blood in the Presence of Five Anti-malarial Drugs

Background: The capacity of human HbAA erythrocytes of non-malarious blood to withstand osmotic stress in the presence of five antimalarial drugs, Chloroquine phosphate, Quinine, FansidarTM, CoartemTM and HalfanTM was studied in vitro. Materials and Methods: Aqueous solutions of four increasing concentrations of the drugs used in this investigation were in the order: 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6% and 0.8% (...

Ameliorative properties of aqueous extract of Ficus thonningii on erythrocyte osmotic fragility induced by acetaminophen in Rattus norvegicus

In vitro antioxidant and erythrocyte protecting activities by aqueous extract of Ficus thonningii leaves on blood cells were studied in acetaminophen treated rats. The extract was safe at limit dose of 5000 mg kg-1body weight. The extract demonstrated dose dependent antihemolytic effect at dose levels between 50 and 200 m...

A Comparison of the Effect of Methyl-β-Cyclodextrin on the Osmotic Fragility of Ovine, Bovine and Human Erythrocytes

Cyclodextrins are used extensively in food, cosmetic, drug and chemical industries to increase aqueous solubility and stability, and reduce or eliminate the unpleasant taste and smell of many products. Experiments were conducted to examine the effect of a pre-haemolytic dose of methyl β-cyclodextrin (MBCD) on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes collected from sheep, cattle and humans. Heparin...
